Description
The Devil's Backbone (Pedilanthus tithymaloides), also known as the Zigzag Plant or Redbird Cactus, is a unique succulent-like shrub known for its distinctive zigzag-shaped stems. Native to the tropical Americas, this hardy plant is popular in ornamental gardens for its unusual structure and vibrant foliage, which can range from green to variegated hues of white, pink, or red, especially when exposed to bright light. It is a drought-tolerant plant that thrives with minimal care, making it a favorite among beginner gardeners.
The Devil's Backbone blooms small, tubular red or pink flowers at the tips of the stems during warmer months. It prefers well-drained soil and bright, indirect sunlight but can also tolerate some shade. Because of its ability to adapt to various environments, this plant is commonly used in xeriscaping and container gardening. It's important to note that Pedilanthus belongs to the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae), so its milky sap can be irritating to the skin if touched.
