Description

Annatto, scientifically known as Bixa orellana, red food dye plant, lipistic tree  is a tropical shrub or small tree prized for its seeds, which are used as a natural food coloring and condiment. The plant produces spiky, reddish-brown fruit that contains bright red seeds. These seeds are processed to extract annatto, a popular food dye that imparts a yellow to orange color to cheeses, butter, and other foods.

Native to Central and South America, Annatto thrives in warm, tropical climates and can reach a height of up to 5 meters. The plant produces large, heart-shaped leaves and pink or white flowers, making it an attractive ornamental plant as well. Beyond its use in the culinary world, annatto is also used in traditional medicine for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
